  • Legacy of riots overshadows Eid in Sri Lanka
Tensions persist in Aluthgama and other Sri Lanka towns hit by communal violence as the fasting month of Ramadan ends.   Aluthgama, Sri Lanka - Tensions persist as Muslim and Sinhalese communities in the Sri Lankan town of Aluthgama try to rebuild their lives in the wake of communal riots. The two-day violence in June overshadowed the traditional observance during Ramadan, which has been a stressful time for local Muslims who were forced to rebuild damaged homes and businesses. But while an older generation in the coastal settlement remains angry at their neighbours, children are looking forward to the Eid al-Fitr celebrations that mark the end of the fasting month. Ashraff, a Muslim boy on his way to the mosque, said he was excited about celebrating Eid and about sharing the food with his Sinhalese friends. "My friends always bring...

I refer to Dr J. Ranasooriya’s letter of July 26. I wrote that the Saudi Arabian authorities don’t allow the building of non-Muslim religious edifices in their country because they conceive of it as having a very special relation with Islam for obvious historical reasons. I was making a statement of fact, without implying in any way that the Saudi practice should be emulated elsewhere. I also wrote that I was certain...

Gaza Crisis

  • Israel vows to destroy tunnels before truce
PM says tunnels Palestinian fighters built under Gaza-Israel border must be destroyed regardless of ceasefire efforts.   Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country is determined, regardless of ceasefire efforts, to complete the destruction of tunnels that Palestinian fighters have built under the Gaza-Israel border.

In public remarks at the start of a cabinet meeting in Tel Aviv, he said he would not agree to any proposal that would not enable the army "to complete this important task for the sake of Israel's security". "Until now, we have destroyed dozens of terror tunnels and we are determined to finish this mission - with or without a ceasefire," Netanyahu said on Thursday. Major General Sami Turgeman, chief of Israeli forces in Gaza, earlier said troops were "but a few days away from destroying all the attack tunnels". Netanyahu’s statement undermines ongoing...
  • US supplies Israel with bombs amid Gaza blitz
Pentagon says Israel allowed to tap local US arms stockpile in past week to resupply it with grenades and mortar rounds. The United States has allowed Israel, waging an offensive in the Gaza Strip, to tap a local US arms stockpile in the past week to resupply it with grenades and mortar rounds, Rear Admiral John Kirby, the Pentagon's press secretary, has said.

The munitions were located inside Israel as part of a programme managed by the US military and called War Reserves Stock Allies-Israel (WRSA-I), which stores munitions locally for US use that Israel can also access in emergency situations. srael, however, did not cite an emergency when it made its latest request about 10 days ago, a defence official said on Wednesday, speaking on condition of anonymity. On Sunday, Barack Obama, the US president,  Read More...
  • Gaza conflict: UN accuses Israel over Jabaliya attack
Israel attacked a UN-run school housing refugees in Gaza despite warnings that civilians were there, the UN has said. UN spokesman Chris Gunness said "the world stands disgraced" by the attack, in which 15 died and dozens were hurt. The Israeli military said an initial inquiry suggested soldiers responded to mortar fire. The military says it is now holding a partial four-hour humanitarian ceasefire. Some 1,200 Palestinians and 55 Israelis have been killed in the conflict. Most of the Palestinian deaths have been civilians. Fifty-three Israeli soldiers have been killed along with two civilians. A Thai worker in Israel has also died. Israel launched its offensive in Gaza after a surge in rocket fire from the territory.   Hamas, which controls Gaza, says it will not stop fighting until the blockade, maintained by both Israel and Egypt, is lifted. The current conflict is now the longest between Israel and militants from Gaza. A 2012 offensive lasted for eight days, and the 2008...

  • Israel intensifies Gaza attacks after Netanyahu warning
Gaza has seen one of its heaviest nights of bombardment in three weeks, after Israel's prime minister warned of a long conflict ahead. Gaza's only power plant was damaged as Israel carried out 60 air strikes, also targeting sites associated with Hamas, the group which controls Gaza. At least 60 people died in Gaza, possibly including UN staff members. An Israeli military spokesman said the strikes signalled a "gradual increase in the pressure" on Hamas. In a televised address on Monday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stressed the need to destroy tunnels dug under the Gaza-Israel border, to prevent militants infiltrating Israel. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed concern that Israel was reported to be dropping leaflets warning residents in northern Gaza to leave. Jump media player

  • Hamas rejects Gaza truce unless blockade ends
Hamas has rejected a ceasefire to end the 16-day offensive against Gaza unless Israel ends its blockade of the strip, its leader Khaled Meshaal has said. "We reject today... and will reject in the future" a ceasefire before negotiations on Hamas's demands, which include lifting years of blockade against the Palestinian enclave, Meshaal told journalists in Doha, Qatar's capital. Lifting the eight-year blockade is a main demand of Hamas which also wants the opening of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt and Israel to free prisoners. Meshaal's statement came as the UN Human Rights Council voted to launch an independent inquiryinto Israel's offensive.

As international calls for an end to the fighting in Gaza mount, Meshaal said that Hamas "welcomes all efforts to end the aggression"...
  • Israeli shelling kills scores in eastern Gaza
Israeli attacks have killed 97 people in the Gaza Strip, raising the overall Palestinian death toll to 435 since the start of a major military campaign on July 8, Palestinian health officials say, as the military wing of Hamas claims it has abducted an Israeli soldier.

The vast majority of Sunday's dead were in Shujayea, a district between Gaza City and the Israeli border, with at least 60 people killed there in an intense bombardment which began overnight. Besides Shujayea, where bodies littered the streets, the worst hit neighbourhoods were al-Shaaf and al-Tuffa. A Shujayea resident who reached a hospital told Al Jazeera: "It is a massacre taking place in Shujayea. It is a massacre - in the full sense of the word - committed by Israel against innocent civilians. There are no armed men among us. The streets of Shujayea are packed with dead bodies." At least 250 others were wounded in Sunday's barrage, raising the overall Palestinian injury toll during the 13 days of violence...
