New Laws to Curb Religious Cults?
WEDNESDAY, 27 MARCH 2013 05:57
The Religious Affairs Ministry intends to introduce a legislation that enables authorities concerned to take action against anyone distorting the original teachings of the four main religions- Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Christianity, officials said yesterday.
Ministry Secretary M.K.B. Dissanayake told the Daily Mirror that a dialogue with the relevant stakeholders had been initiated in this regard to introduce such a law in the country. However, Mr. Dissanayake said the Ministry is yet to identify modalities for a mechanism to curb distortions of original teachings of the main religions.
“It is a difficult task. We are yet to draft the bill to be presented in Parliament,” he said.
In Sri Lanka, there are cases where various religious cults have been formed challenging the original teachings.
Asked whether a new law would be introduced to deal with sacrilegious items being imported to the country, he said such activities should be curbed through the normal law of this country only.

Anti-Muslim Campaign is Anti-Sri Lanka
IN THE NATIONAL INTEREST
By Javid Yusuf
Sri Lanka’s attempts at national reconciliation have received a major setback with the latest inter-communal tensions in several parts of the country.
Picking up the pieces after a protracted and debilitating civil war that drained national resources for over three decades would be a daunting task for any country. If it is a country which is on the bottom half of the economic ladder the task of rebuilding becomes that much more difficult. Moreover, creating new problems for ourselves would mean facilitating a situation which impedes any process of reconciliation. A repetition of the tragic events of the past is a luxury that Sri Lanka and its people can ill afford.
When every effort should be made to identify the mistakes of the past and correct them, we are allowing irresponsible small groups to do just the opposite and adding to our list of problems. With the process of reconciliation between the Tamil community and the State as well as between the Tamil and Sinhalese communities still finding its feet, making the Muslims insecure renders the nation building project an even more formidable task.
The current anti-Muslim campaign has come as a rude shock and a bolt from the blue to a community which had been peacefully going about its day-to-day lives without treading on anyone’s toes. The virulent nature of the discourse and the manner in which it has been carried out clearly reflects a desire to target the Muslims rather than a genuine attempt to address Sinhalese or Buddhist concerns. Any concerns of a community can and should be discussed and addressed through dialogue and discussion in a sensitive manner without recourse to public platforms and street demonstrations that inflame passions and spread insecurity among people.

20 March 2013, 5:55 am
By D.B.S.Jeyaraj
There is much concern among members of the Muslim community in Sri Lanka over the increasing number of unprovoked attacks on Muslim women wearing the “Abaya”, the robe like overgarment that covers the whole body
The issue is being viewed with concern at discussions of the Muslim community in different places in Sri Lanka and also features prominently in exchanges of views conducted via various media organs.
It is learnt that this issue was delved into at a recent meeting between some Muslim members of Parliament and representatives of the All Ceylon Jamiyathul Ulama(ACJU)that was convened by Cabinet minister of Urban Affairs AHM Fowzie to examine the full implications of the “Halal”certification Issue.
ABAYA
What is troubling the community most is the phenomenon of rising incidents concerning Muslim women in the Country wearing the Abaya.
