  • Anti-terrorism Bill will be changed
The highly controversial Antiterrorism Bill is subject to amendments and changes in Parliament and as such no one should have any fear or feeling of threat from the proposed Bill, Justice Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said. Addressing a news conference at the Information Department auditorium, Minister Rajapakshe said the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) passed in 1979 under President J.R. The PTA has been misused and exploited by successive Governments since then for their personal and political...

HOW TO BE A VIP ON THE DAY OF JUDGMENT

Latest

User Rating: / 11
PoorBest

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,

"Allah will cover seven people with special shade, on the Day when there will be no shade: a just ruler, a youth who has grown up in the worship of Allah, a man whose heart is attached to the mosques, two persons who love each other only for Allah’s sake and they meet and part in Allah’s cause only, a man who refuses the call of a beautiful and influential woman for illicit relation with her and says: I am afraid of Allah, a man who gives charitable gifts so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given, and a person who remembers Allah while he is alone and his eyes are flooded with tears." (Al-Bukhari)

We all need this shade. To be under the shade is to be protected by Him and be blessed by Him. We need the shade in this life and in the Hereafter. It is mentioned that the Day of Judgment will be a very hard and difficult Day. On that day everyone will be worried and will try to find some protection and shade; but there will be no shade on that Day except the special shade and only particular group of people will stay under it by the will of Allah. This shade will be granted to seven special types of people:

1. A just ruler or a just leader: It could be any person who has some authority and he/she uses this authority with justice and fairness without any favoritism or prejudice. Justice is the command of God for all people; but the most critical is the doing of justice when one has power and authority. More difficult is, of course, dealing justly with those who show hate and animosity towards you. A just person, especially a just leader or ruler, is given number one place in this list of seven.

2. A young person growing up in the worship of Allah: Worship of Allah is good for all people at any age and time; but the worship of Allah from the tender young age has special blessings. Many people become devoted to Allah when they grow old. In the old age when the body becomes weak, people start paying attention to the spirit. However, to be conscious of one’s spirit and growing up as a youth in the obedience of Allah bring a special honor and blessings.

3. A person whose heart is connected to the mosque: Literally it says that the heart is hanging (mu`allaq) in the mosque. Imam Malik explained that it was a person who when he leaves the mosque, looks forward to coming back again soon. Normally people’s hearts are attached to their jobs, business and home. Mosque is not the priority for many people. However, those who love the House of Allah and keep it as their priority are the blessed people and they shall receive the special favor of Allah.

4.Two people loving each other for the sake of Allah: One should be friendly to all people and deal with all people in a kind and courteous manner. However, the friendship for the sake of Allah, for the reasons of piety and goodness is a very blessed friendship. This is a sincere friendship and when two or more people become attached to each other for Allah’s sake they bring a lot of good to themselves and to those around them. This is a kind of friendship that generates goodness in the world and is especially blessed by Allah.

5. A person of solid moral character: The Prophet gave an example of this solid character. He said a man tempted for illicit relationship by a woman who is beautiful and rich, influential or of a prestigious family (the word “mansib” means all these things in Arabic) and he refuses. Imam Ibn Hajar says that this is not limited to a man only who is tempted by a woman; it equally applies to a woman who may be tempted by a man who is very beautiful, powerful and rich and she refuses and says “I fear Allah.” It requires a lot of moral strength to refuse temptation when the other partner is attractive, rich, and not only consenting but persuasive. Those who have such a strong character are indeed under the protection of Allah.

6. A person of charity who does not show off his/her charity: A person gives charity in such a way that even his left hand does not know what his right hand has done. This is a very powerful and beautiful way to say that a person gives quietly, discreetly and with sincerity. His/her purpose is not to show off, seek publicity, name or fame; but only to please Allah. This is the highest kind of charity and it has a special reward and blessing from Allah.

7. A person who remembers Allah privately with eyes filled with tears: Thinking of Allah, repeating His Beautiful Names, thanking Him and praising Him, these are the ways to remember (dhikr) Allah. Doing the “dhikr” alone in one’s privacy, when no one is watching, with moving heart and tearful eyes is a sign of sincere faith and deep love of Allah. Those who have the love of Allah, they are indeed under this shade and protection.

All these seven characters are deeply moral and spiritual characters. They indicate a person’s faith and sincere commitment. They are related to feeling, thinking, speaking and action. These are true characters of sincere believers. We pray to Allah to bless us with these characters and with the shade in this world and also in the Hereafter. Ameen.

Imam of China's largest mosque killed in Xinjiang

Chinese soldiers march in front of the Id Kah Mosque, China's largest, on 31 July 2014 in Kashgar, China Mr Tahir's death in front of the Id Kah mosque came after clashes in Yarkant county, which is in the same prefecture

The imam of China's largest mosque - in the city of Kashgar in Xinjiang - has been killed in what appears to be a targeted assassination.

Jume Tahir, 74, was reportedly stabbed after he led early morning prayers at the Id Kah mosque on Wednesday.

His killing came two days after dozens of people were reportedly killed or injured in clashes with police in Yarkant county, in the same prefecture.

The reasons for his death remain unclear.

But the BBC's Damian Grammaticas in Beijing says Mr Tahir, who was from Xinjiang's mainly Muslim Uighur ethnic minority, was a vocal and public supporter of Chinese policies in the region.

Radio Free Asia quoted an unnamed shopowner near Id Kah as saying he saw a body lying in a pool of blood front of the mosque in the morning and police clearing a huge crowd that had gathered. He was told the body was that of Mr Tahir.

A hasty burial was conducted by the late afternoon and the funeral procession was heavily guarded by military and police, according to The Los Angeles Times .

Shortly after his death, police sealed off roads in and out of Kashgar and cut internet and text messaging links to other parts of China. Those restrictions have since been lifted.

Mr Tahir was appointed imam of the 600-year-old mosque by China's ruling Communist Party.

Some say he was deeply unpopular among many Uighurs who disliked the fact that he praised Communist Party policies while preaching in his mosque.

He had also echoed the official government line that blamed the rising level of violence in Xinjiang on Uighur separatists and extremists, says our correspondent.

The 600-year-old mosque is one of the most prominent landmarks in Kashgar city
Chinese soldiers march past near the Id Kah Mosque, China's largest, on 31 July 2014 in Kashgar, ChinaGroups of soldiers have also been patrolling the streets of Kashgar

On Monday, a knife-wielding gang attacked a police station and government offices triggering clashes that killed "dozens" of Uighur and Han Chinese civilians, according to state media outlet Xinhua.

But activists disputed this account and said that local Uighurs were protesting against a Chinese crackdown on the observance of Ramadan, which ended on Monday.

Reports surfaced earlier this month that some government departments in Xinjiang were banning Muslim staff from fasting during Ramadan, and several university students told the BBC that they were being forced to have meals with professors.

There has been an upsurge in Xinjiang-linked violence that authorities have attributed to Uighur separatists.

In May at least 31 people were killed when two cars crashed through an Urumqi market and explosives were thrown. In March, a mass stabbing at Kunming railway station killed 29 people.

In response Chinese authorities have launched a year-long security campaign which includes increased police and troop presence in key cities and towns in Xinjiang. Scores of people have been arrested, and some sentenced to lengthy jail terms or death.

Recipe for a Successful Marriage

Recipe for a Successful Marriage

“Our Lord! Grant that our spouses and our offspring be a comfort to our eyes, and give us the grace to lead those who are conscious of You” (Furqaan 74).

Question: Every human being by nature has an instinct to dispute. This instinct becomes more manifest between the husband and wife, thus leading to marital disputes. How can this instinct be controlled?

Answer: Consider the following ten points to control the instinct of dispute and maintain a happy marriage.

1. Fear Allah: It was the noble practice of Nabi salallahu alayhi wasallam to conscientise the spouses about the fear for Allah before performing a Nikah by reciting the verses (Nisa v14, Ahzab v69, Aali-Imraan v101) from the Quraan. All the verses are common in the message of Taqwa (fear of Allah). The spouses will be first committed to Allah before being committed to their partner. There can be no doubt in the success of a marriage governed by the fear of Allah.

2. Never be angry at the same time: Anger is the root cause for all marital disputes. One Sahabi came to Rasulullah salallahu alayhi wasallam and sought some advice. Rasulullah salallahu alayhi wasallam replied, control your anger. The same advice was rendered three times. (Mishkaat pg.433; HM Saeed)

3. If one has to win an argument, let it be the other: Nabi salallahu alayhi wasallam said: “Whoever discards an argument despite being correct shall earn a palace in the centre of Jannah. (Ibid pg.412)

4. Never shout at each other unless the house is on fire: Luqman (Alaihis Salaam) while offering advice to his son said: ” and lower your voice for verily the most disliked voice is that of a donkey”. (Surah Luqman v19)

5. If you have to criticize, do it lovingly: Rasulullah salallahu alayhi wasallam said, ‘A Mu’ min is a mirror for a Mu’min.’ (Abu Dawud vol.2 pg.325; Imdadiyah) Advise with dignity and silently.

6. Never bring up mistakes of the past: Nabi Muhammad salallahu alayhi wasallam said: “Whoever conceals the faults of others, Allah shall conceal his faults on the day of Qiyaamah.” (Mishkaat pg.429; HM Saeed)

7. Neglect the whole world rather than your marriage partner: Nabi Muhammad salallahu alayhi wasallam confirmed the advice of Salman to Abu-Darda (Radiayallaahu Anhu) for neglecting his wife. “Verily there is a right of your wife over you.” (Nasai Hadith2391)

8. Never sleep with an argument unsettled: Abu Bakr radiallahu anhu resolved his dispute with his wife over-feeding the guests before going to bed. (Bukhari Hadith 602)

9. At least, once everyday, express your gratitude to your partner:Nabi Muhammad salallahu alayhi wasallam said, ‘Whoever does not show gratitude to the people has not shown gratitude to Allah.’ (Abu Dawud pg.662; Karachi)

10. When you have done something wrong, be ready to admit it and ask for forgiveness: Nabi Muhammad salallahu alayhi wasallam said, ‘All the sons of Aadam commit error, and the best of those who err are those who seek forgiveness.’ (Tirmidhi Hadith 2499)

Legacy of riots overshadows Eid in Sri Lanka

Tensions persist in Aluthgama and other Sri Lanka towns hit by communal violence as the fasting month of Ramadan ends.

Aluthgama, Sri Lanka - Tensions persist as Muslim and Sinhalese communities in the Sri Lankan town of Aluthgama try to rebuild their lives in the wake of communal riots.

The two-day violence in June overshadowed the traditional observance during Ramadan, which has been a stressful time for local Muslims who were forced to rebuild damaged homes and businesses.

But while an older generation in the coastal settlement remains angry at their neighbours, children are looking forward to the Eid al-Fitr celebrations that mark the end of the fasting month.

Ashraff, a Muslim boy on his way to the mosque, said he was excited about celebrating Eid and about sharing the food with his Sinhalese friends.

"My friends always bring food during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, and I do the same during Eid," he said.

"This year will be no different - they did not attack our homes, so I do not know why they cannot celebrate with us."

Rebuilding under way

At least four people were killed when Muslims and their properties were attacked by Sinhalese Buddhists in Aluthgama, Beruwala, and Dharga, and 2,000 people were displaced in southwestern Sri Lanka in violence that followed rallies by a hardline Buddhist group, Bodu Bala Sena.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa responded to the clashes by ordering the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development to rebuild damaged homes and businesses.

A ministry spokesperson, Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya, told Al Jazeera that 35 houses and seven shops had been restored and returned to their owners while an additional 103 houses and 25 shops were still undergoing repairs.

The upheaval disrupted Ramadan and left many Muslims fearful about the future. Mohammed Shezad, a resident of Aluthgama, said this year his children did not observe the fast.

"I have two young children whom, on the night of the riots, I had to take to the mosque so that they would be safe," he told Al Jazeera. "For several weeks they had sleepless nights, I could not ask them to fast as well."

Shezad did not believe Eid al-Fitr would be joyful for his family this year.

"How can we celebrate when our homes were attacked and shops burnt down? Every night I am scared for my family's safety: those riots targeted us because we are Muslim.

"If we celebrate Eid, who is to say they will not attack us again?"

His sister and her three children are now living with his family while their house is being rebuilt.

"The army promised it will be complete in a month, and until then my sister and her children will stay with us," Shezad said.

"The shop I worked at was burnt down, so I have no work. The owners have promised to pay me, but they said they must wait until the shop is rebuilt. I do not have enough money to look after both families and celebrate Eid."

Call for clampdown

Some Muslims like Mohammed Althaf, whose house suffered several broken windows and a damaged roof, believe that simply rebuilding homes and shops will not repair the damage done to the community as a whole.

"We were a community of Sinhalese and Muslims who had lived together for decades in peace. Now both sides are suspicious of one another," Althaf said.

"I do not believe that the Sinhalese of Aluthgama took part in the riots, but they did not help us either. By the second day, Sinhalese homes were putting out the Buddhist flag so as to make sure they were not affected."

Althaf urged the authorities to take strict action against those responsible for the violence.

"If the government is genuine about their desire to live in harmony, then violence such as what we saw must be stopped. These people must be arrested and charged, otherwise what will stop them from doing something like this elsewhere?"

Police spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana said that 124 people had been arrested in connection with the violence, nearly 100 of whom had appeared in court.

"Those who have been remanded will be produced before the courts once again and then it is up to the courts to decide their punishment," he said.

Mixed feelings

There are mixed feelings on both sides in this community about who is to blame and what the future holds.

Ranjith Boteju, a Sinhalese resident who has lived in Aluthgama for 60 years, condemned the rioters.

"As a Sinhalese I am ashamed that this happened," he told Al Jazeera.

"I have never seen such violence before in my life, I have lots of Muslim friends and they were all affected. The month of Ramadan is very special to them and this year I have seen many of them living in fear that a repeat of the violence could occur."

Yet, not all Sinhalese residents share his sentiments.

"Some Muslims had stoned a procession that was going to the temple and the Sinhalese involved fought back," said resident Asela Ratnasinghe. "Several of them attacked a Buddhist monk on Poson poya, which is a religious day for us.

"I do not support those who burnt down shops and homes - but the Sinhalese must be allowed to defend themselves if attacked by someone."

Despite simmering tensions, the government is confident that the communities can continue to coexist peacefully.

Sri Lankan cabinet spokesperson Keheliya Rambukwella said that what happened in Aluthgama was an isolated incident and the government would ensure the safety of all communities.

"The month of Ramadan has passed with no such violence, and we do not expect there to be," Rambukwella told Al Jazeera.

"Sri Lanka is a country where all communities are free to practise their religion."

With devotion in mind I send this message of felicitation on the day of Eid ul-Fitr (Ramazan Festival) or the Day of Equality being celebrated to mark the month of the revealing of the Holy Quran, that teaches the way for a peaceful living among Islamic devotees with equality and co-existence, Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne stated in a message to mark the Ramazan festival.

The message:“ On this noble day it should be borne in mind that Prophet Mohammed has said that nobody in society shall starve on the day of Ramazan that begins after the observance of the ritual, the sighting of the New Moon after having observed one month’s fasting. “My personal belief is that the ritual of fasting that paves way to a pious and prosperous life is not a mere observance carried out obeying the Almighty Allah’s orders but also it should be made use of as a cultural bridge that nurtures the goodwill among all nations.

“At a time where a tranquil environment has been established in the country to live in peace and co-existence under the leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, being Islamic devotees, there is a major role of responsibility upon you as Sri Lankans.

“It is my sincere hope that you may all have the power and courage towards achieving the worthy cause of strengthening the wall of co-existence among us.”
