  • Anti-terrorism Bill will be changed
The highly controversial Antiterrorism Bill is subject to amendments and changes in Parliament and as such no one should have any fear or feeling of threat from the proposed Bill, Justice Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said. Addressing a news conference at the Information Department auditorium, Minister Rajapakshe said the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) passed in 1979 under President J.R. Jayewardene’s rule as a temporary measure to counter the emerging separatist insurgency. The PTA has been misused and exploited by successive Governments since then for their personal and political...

Setting up a secondary phone to use with your WhatsApp account happens after doing a fresh install of the app. Except, rather than entering your phone number during setup and logging in as usual, you instead tap a new “link to existing account” option. This will generate a QR...

Yes we are doing politics…but not party politics

In an exclusive interview, Dailymirror spoke to the Secretary General of Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) Ven. Galaboda Aththe Gnanasara Thera on the Aluthgama incident and on the allegations levelled against his organizations

Although the Aluthgama incident is now a thing of the past do you think the speech you made on June 15 in Aluthgama led to the violence which erupted afterwards?

One of the most serious allegations they have levelled against us is that we instigated the people. I dismiss and reject the allegation.

Language is a relative thing. We should not look at the language, we should look at the point we are trying to make not how it is being said. The Sinhalese Language is a language which could be used in anyway. The motive was to attack poison with poison like anti-venom treatment.

Before we talk about how I spoke we should look at what happened in Aluthgama. On Poson Poya Day, which was Thursday, Venerable Samitha Thera was attacked by a group of extremists.

A few days before the incident the remains of a cow were found in front of his temple and he did not retaliate but  lodged a complaint with the police. But we have questions about the state of these investigations.

On the day of the attack on the monk, the tensed Buddhists were advised and dispersed. Around 2000-3000 people gathered to protest but we managed to disperse them peacefully.

We decided to hold a press conference on Friday but nothing was reported about it. So we decided to hold a rally on Sunday.

Our objective was to advise the people to be calm in solving these issues without being violent. Now if you listen to my speech, during most of the time you can hear people clapping and whistling in response to the remarks I made on the police, area politicians and other issues we are facing.

From the speech we were able to calm down the people who gathered and we were there for 40 minutes. While they were returning home after the rally was peacefully dismissed they were passing a mosque at which time they came under attack. When a monk was injured the people became tensed and then the news spread to the adjoining areas.

If they were instigated by my speech, then within seconds they should have started attacking.

If you listen to the language of Anagarika Dharmapala, it was that which enabled to wake up the people. This was the same with people like Sir John Kotalawela.
What we are we are doing is performing a national responsibility, a national cause to wake up the people. In our teachings there is no extremism.

But you have been criticized as an extremist organization?

That is the most surprising thing. We are transparent and people are aware of our views.

But are these Muslim extremist organizations transparent like us? For instance the All Ceylon Jamaiyyatul Ulama and the National Shoora Council, are they transparent?

Who has given power to establish Shoora Councils in Sri Lanka? But they go and say BBS is a terrorist organization. In Middle Eastern countries these Shoora Councils are the highest national councils in the land.

Only the president can appoint such national councils. People like Alavi Mowlana have even spoken against such extremism. There were incidents in Dodamgaslanda, Galle that were due to extremism.

Right now even in India they are attacking each other because of extremism, so is it the BBS which is responsible for that too.
Because of the immense religious freedom in Sri Lanka there is room for such extremist groups to establish themselves within the country in a short space of time.
Most of the teachings that these extremists follow needs to be questioned. Therefore the educated individuals of their community should rethink whether such teachings are applicable at this time.

We do not harm anyone but it should be questioned whether it is the same view taken by such extremist organizations. This is a historical injustice and that is why we are fighting to correct it.

Palitha Thewarapperuma’s allegation is that it was your followers that committed the crimes on that day?

There is an allegation that Gotabaya Rajapaksa is behind us and the President is behind us and even Norway is behind us.
If these allegations are proven true we are ready to disband our organization by tomorrow. When we look at these allegations we can easily see the politics which is going behind it.

Now these allegations leveled by Therwarapperuma are simply baseless. We did not even see him on that day. So if he is saying that he was assaulted, he can go and complain it to the police. I tell you with responsibility that the BBS consisted only of monks on that day. Before that we organized 40 such rallies even in Mawanella and Kurunegala.

For every rally that we held there were more than 15,000 people. We never assaulted anyone at any of those rallies.

But the allegation is that you brought in people from outside who were armed with clubs and poles?

That is why we are stepping up to take legal action against the individuals who are making these baseless allegations that are being brought against us. There should be an end to such baseless allegations.

So you’re saying that BBS is going to take legal action against Palitha Thewarapperuma?

Definitely. Without knowing anything about the incident, he is putting the blame on the entire Sangha community.

We do not like to take up personal matters of these people because we do not want to go down to their level.

But when a Buddhist MP goes and says to the international community that it was us who attacked the people, we have to take action. People who were tensed at that time may have attacked others but because of that the blame should not be on us.

So we can see that these individuals are engaged in low class politics which we roundly condemn.

The Police acted blindly when everything was happening that day? Do you agree with that?

The police needs to be rehabilitated and reorganized which is something that everyone would agree with.

I tell you with responsibility that a majority of the policemen in Aluthgama and Beruwala were under the influence of the Muslim community living in these areas in order to make sure that they can smoothly engage in the businesses they are involved in.

Therefore, it is natural if the police acted blindly. People do not have any trust in the police.

There is an allegation that you are being backed by foreign elements who want to destabilize the country, there are also questions about your trip to Norway?

It is very wrong and a baseless allegation. There is this belief that a monk should only be a liberator but not a social activist.
So when we become social activists we become the butt of a lot of allegations.

Even during Buddhas time there were attempts to curtail this. That is why the Buddha has also said that there is no individual in this world who is not being subjected to insults and humiliation.

Now if you listen to my speech, during most of the time you can hear people clapping and whistling in response to the remarks I made on the police, area politicians and other issues we are facing

The victims are the ones who attempt to rehabilitate our society. So when we engage in social activities these allegations are levelled against us. I would like to tell you clearly that our intention is not to put the country in a difficult position or topple the government or even to bring someone from the opposition into power.
We do not have a political party agenda we have a national agenda.

This is a straight question so I need a straight answer. Do you get foreign aid?

No. I do not get aid from NGO’s, embassies or any other foreign country. We receive funds from Sinhala Buddhists around the world.

What did you tell the CID?

They asked me about the speech I made and asked me, like you did, whether it instigated the incident.
So from word to word I explained. But I also told them not to curtail the activities of Buddhist organizations only but also to question these so called extremist groups about their activities. In 1915 when there was an issue between the Buddhist and the Muslim communities it was our colonial rulers who were able to benefit from it. Finally they took revenge and punished everyone who was involved.

Don’t you think that the people do not have a good opinion about the BBS after the incident?

We do not accept that. Incidents happen everyday.  Unfortunately the people have lost the right to know the truth. So no one knows what exactly happened that day but the finger was pointed at the speech I made.

Now after the incident your leader resigned and senior monks have advised you as well. What did they tell you?

Our leader has not resigned. He was also under lot of stress as he was told many versions about what happened in Aluthgama and Beruwala.
His mind was completely confused at the beginning but now he is very much aware of what happened on that day. What came first were the lies and the truth came later.
Yes, senior monks advised me to control the language and words that I use. But I told them not to look at the words I used but at the meaning and focus on the point I am trying to make. We told the Muslim leaders to stop because we have stopped. The day after the incident we held a meeting at the Kalutara Kachcheri which was chaired by Prime Minister D.M Jayaratne and attended by Minister Basil Rajapaksa. The goal of the meeting was to have reconciliation among the religions and the communities. But immediately after the incident the Muslim leaders organized harthals around the country as well as in London and Paris.
Some extremists want to enter the political arena and they have very powerful links. Irony is that without looking at the issue they are trying to turn it into something else completely.
Muslim leaders should solve these issues otherwise this country will become another Sudan. Some call us terrorists. You have to define that. Do we act like terrorists?

One could say that you’re engaged in politics. Is it true?

Yes we are doing politics but it is not party politics, what we are engaged in is called national politics. We are doing a service to protect the ‘Shasanaya’.

But aren’t you putting the foundation to contest future elections?

Yes, people have the right to think like that. We are not trying to engage in party politics. Who are these people in the parliament? How many politicians have criminal records? Within this national framework we believe that we can change the present political culture. There will be a significant change in politics in the future at the national level and that is why we always say that these elements are attempting to do everything possible to hinder our efforts.

An attempt had allegedly been made on the life of Sri Lanka Bar Association (BASL) President Upul Jayasuriya by two men who followed him on a motorcycle today, the DM Online learns.

Mr. Jayasuriya told journalists that the two men had doggedly followed him when he was returning from courts this afternoon at around 4 p.m.

Mr. Jayasuriya said that he saw a connection between a statement issued by the BASL condemning the banning of NGOs from holding news conferences, workshops and training of media personnel by the government and the incident.

He told journalists that he noticed two men following his car as he was returning from courts this afternoon at around 4 p.m. He said he had to stop the vehicle for about half an hour in Fort to take cover.

The two men were hovering on their motorcycle while I remained in Fort, he said.

Later the men had followed him to his office at Flower Road, in Colombo 3.

“The two men had also stopped their motorcycle near my office and remained there for a while but subsequently fled after I raised alarm,” he said.

The BASL President later lodged a complaint with the Cinnamon Gardens Police. (Yohan Perera and Sanath Desmond)

Video: Expel Hakeem, calls BBS

Latest

TUESDAY, 15 JULY 2014 15:53

The Bodhu Bala Sena (BBS) today urged the government to expel Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem from the government over the recent statements he had made against what he called “Buddhist extremism and the need to control it.”

“We are ashamed of the President and government because Hakeem had condemned the Buddhists and the monks who brought the President into power,” BBS Secretary General Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera said at a media briefing this morning.

“If I am the leader I would have fired him,” he said.

The BBS called recent statements made by Minister Hakeeem were dangerous and noted them as an insult to Buddhists in the country.

His predecessor wanted to unite the Muslims though he had sentiments of nationalism at the beginning, he said.

“We do not know why he was making such baseless statements. Was it us who attacked the people who were going home after attending the rally in Aluthgama,” he questioned.

“If the government has fear and shame within itself, then expel him. We know that he won’t stay in the government for long,” he noted.

The BBS Secretary General said that Hakeem was never a part of the government in 2005 or in 2010 as he never supported the government at elections. (Supun Dias and Sanath Desmond)

From A ‘Thambi’ To An ‘Aiyya’

Latest

User Rating: / 5
PoorBest

By  The Nation Sunday, 13 July 2014

A response to article by Chameera Dedduwge’s article “Thank you ‘Thambi’!” published last week

My Dear Sinhala Aiyye, I read your article which was published on 6th July in ‘Nation Newspaper’ under the heading of ‘Thank you My Thambi’. Firstly Aiyye I think you did not have a better and decent heading other than the one you used because your intention was to insult the community which your beloved Thambi belongs to.

Secondly Aiyye when I saw this article I was little disappointed. More than that I was surprised. I was wondering whether that was the same Aiyya who had lived with me for years with cordial relationship and with better understanding. Aiyye to be honest I was observing your behavior since 2005. I saw some changes in your attitude especially after May 2009. Nevertheless my sentiments are not what are important, but I need to respond to your article by which you have insulted the community which I belong to.

The article you had written Aiyye can easily be linked to a famous Sinhala saying of ‘ OLUWA  ATHA- GA-TOKU ANEEMA’. In political term Aiyye it can be described as ‘ Jaathiwadayata Manushika Muhunuwarak’ (human face to racism).Aiyye, you started with Sri Lanka and Pakistan cricket matches. You yourself mentioned it was very few Thambees who were supporting Pakistan. Aiyye you have become so matured and not sure why you worry about handful of people. It is very similar to when cricket matches took place between Ananda and Zahira. One or two Sinhalese students in Zahira College were supporting Ananda College. But we are intelligent enough to ignore such foolishness. It is an individual act and depends on how you were brought up.

Then Aiyye you talk about my halaal food. I still remember Aiyye the times when you and I happily sat together and took part meals in the same bowl. Do you remember Aiyye you told me ‘machan’ this is chicken and cautioned me from eating meat which we were not sure of. Sometimes you prevented me eating pork when I was trying to have it by mistake. Aiyye, you did not want me to eat pork and later conned me. How nice of you Aiyye. Also Aiyye do you remember some of our Buddhist friends who wanted separate plates and did not eat from the same bowl you and I shared food. This is because they were vegetarians.  I together with you and the rest of the crowd did not mock at them because we respected their beliefs. But Aiyye what happened to you all of a sudden?  You have become so narrow-minded Aiyye. Don’t do this Aiyye.

Aiyye you mentioned that we wanted new mosques and loudspeakers and you allowed us because you also build temples and use loudspeakers. So Aiyye your theory is you will give me only what you have. But Aiyye to take it in that manner I do not follow Buddhism (But respect) but I follow Islam. According to your theory what is not in Buddhism should not be made available for those practicing Islam. Aiyye do you remember one day when we went on a trip, you took me miles away from our guest house for a Friday Prayers? You were blaming the authorities why they couldn’t have a mosque closeby even though you took me by the car and the villages in that area do not have vehicles. What happened to you Aiyye all of a sudden?

Now Aiyye you talk about building Madrasas. Aiyye you send your children to’ Daham paasal’ and you don’t’ want my children to go to their ‘Daham pasal’? When my children go to Sinhalese or Tamil schools, Islamic Daham Paasal are not allowed there (which is fair enough). Tell me Aiyye, what is the alternative for my Children to learn about their religion? So Aiyye is it fair only for your children to learn about religion. Our Proud father especially after May 2009 always says that there are only two ‘jaatheen’ (races) in this country;  one is those who love the country and one who don’t, meaning all have same rights. But I am sure Aiyye you are a follower of our Proud father and why don’t you take good things out of him and leave bad things.

Then Aiyye you talk about our marriages. You say after marrying a Sinhalese girl ‘Thambiyaas’ force the girl to become Muslim. You may be correct Aiyye, but unfortunately you know only such few cases. But Aiyye if you come with me I will show you how nicely Muslim husbands who have married to Sinhalese girls,  are living peacefully by practicing their own religions. Once again Aiyye it is how you were brought up and how best you understand principles of your religion. So Aiyye it is based on individuals. Don’t you think Aiyye even in your community and my community there are husbands who promise a wonderful life before marriage, but become so harsh on their wives due to so many external pressures?. So is it not individual reactions?

Also Aiyye you mentioned that there is law in Islam which allows marriage to marry girls, under age of 16. My dear Aiyye could you please show me where that law is coming from with correct source and quotes?Aiyye you accused us of building Dharga nagars (towns) in your Sinhalese lands. Once again I humbly request you to follow what is our proud father says at every Independence Day and war heroes, celebration day.

Then you talk about Aluthgama. You are trying to prove the first stone came from the mosque. I don’t blame you Aiyye even the entire cabinet including head of the cabinet were debating who threw the first stone, whether a thambiya or Sinhala Aiyya.? They did not query how come so many houses were destroyed and more than 3 lives were lost while thousands of police and STF were being deployed. Childish isn’t it Aiyye? All right Aiyye even if we believe the first stone came from the mosque, how come houses which were 100m to 2km away from the mosque also burnt? When I mocked at you at our class you did not harm every Muslim student in our school?

Aiyye you have accepted your people (Sinhalese) went crazy in Aluthgama. But this is not true Aiyye. It is not Sinhalese people. By making claims about your people don’t put the blame on the entire Sinhalese community. It is very unfair by them and paints a bad image on the Sinhalese, internationally. It was well planned and organized mobs that carried out this attack on thambees.

Now Aiyye you say finally everything was settled. You say the government has paid Rs. 200mn. So you think Aiyye wounds of Muslims can be erased with this Rs. 200mn even though it is not sufficient. Aiyye, looks like you are worried about the ‘Hartaal’. But Aiyye we are in a country where when a private bus driver is being attacked, all private busses go on strike. So Aiyye don’t you think that we have a right to show our displeasure to the Government for their inaction?
Finally Aiyye you say we have forgotten that we have people like Muthalib and Imtiaz Bakeer marker in our community and also you Aiyye. You have forgotten people like Vijaya Kumarathunga and Wickramabahu Karunarathna who are not racist by any means.  But what you don’t know Aiyye is both Muthalib and Imtiaz are cautious about their halaal food. They went to Madrasas and they follow Islamic law in their personal life. But Aiyye people like you and some others who claim themselves as moderate Buddhists always use the names of Muthalib and Imtiaz and attack rest of the Thambees. This is what you call Aiyye ‘Oluwa Atha Ga Toku Aneema’. PLEASE DON’T DO THIS MY SINHALa AIYYE. THIS IS TOO MUCH. ENOUGH.
