As the only living former President/Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, I felt the responsibility to speak out in order to resolve the prevalent religious tensions in the country, Former President Chandrika Bandaranike Kumaratunga said today.

Speaking to the media during the event held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute to present the recommendations on ‘Promoting Religious Harmony’ by the ‘Forum for Inter Faith Dialogue’ (FOIFD), Ms. Kumaratunga said, “I have remained silent for a long time because I get hammered by the government-run media whenever I make a comment on a current issue in the country, claiming that I have no right to do so. But I believe I have every reason to voice my concerns as I am a premier citizen of this country. So when I took up this cause I realised that most moderate Buddhists are frightened to talk due to fear of intimidations and the killings that are going on. . .”

She stated therefore she realised that she did not wish to remain silent anymore and hence, worked in collaboration with the South Asia Policy and Research Institute (SAPRI) to establish the ‘Forum on Inter Faith Dialogue’ (FOIFD).

Ms. Kumaratunga also stressed on the importance for the people to be aware of a moderate point of view. “The moderates at the start were very scared to express their thoughts but they are now beginning to be convinced of the need for another voice to reach the people. The masses have been concerned of the rumours that circulated on Muslims taking over Sri Lanka, their population increase etc. Although most didn’t wish to believe these claims, they did not hear any other view either,” she added.

Anunayake thero of Maha Vihara Vanshika Shiyampali Maha Nikaya Malwatta Chapter of Sri Lanka – Venerable Niyangoda Vijithasiri thera, The Anunayake Thero of the Amarapura Maha Nikaya – Venerable Kotugoda Dhammavasa thera, Colombo Archbishop Reverend Oswald Gomis,  Moulavi M.R. Mahir and S. Kuhantha Sharma Swamy also spoke.

10 things you did not know about President Mursi

At times of great tribulation and turmoil, the first casualty is always the truth. Why? Because the greatest weapon in the hands of the oppressors and tyrants is their ability to manipulate the  facts  to suit their agenda. Because without the truth, we cannot see what is right and what is wrong. Without the truth, there is only falsehood… and injustice.

And that is how we find ourselves where we are in Egypt today, where the elected President of a nation – who was kidnapped and held incommunicado for months till his supporters could be imprisoned, crushed, tortured, killed and banned – stands trial for crimes that seem to multiply by the day. Depending on which side of the divide you fall, President Mursi is either a principled hero of epic proportions or a bungling nefarious criminal mastermind. So who is the real President Mursi?

Here are ten little known facts that may help provide us with some clues:

1. He is a Hafiz of the Qurʾān : One of the little known facts about the president is that he has memorised the entireQurʾān by heart. This is no mean feat and something that itself is worthy of praise. The Prophet ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said: “The best among you (Muslims) are those who learn theQurʾān and teach it.” Abu Musa Al Asharee raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said,“Part of showing glory to Allāh is to show respect to a white-haired Muslim, and a carrier of the Qurʾān who does not exaggerate in it nor ignore it and a just ruler.” An interesting combination of virtues there don’t you think?

2. He is intelligent: It is widely assumed that Mursi is not that bright. He is repeatedly portrayed as bumbling and dimwitted. His detractors point to a series of decisions that seemed to exacerbate anger against him – such as the taxation U-turns, the choice of governor for Luxor and his battle royale against the judiciary. And yet the majority evidence points to Mursi being much more academically gifted than any of his detractors. He has a PHD, is a professor and was the head of the Department of Engineering in Zagazig University. He has previously worked on various projects in America and was a visiting professor there. In his short time in office, he managed to achieve a fair amount and surrounded himself with individuals with proven track records in their fields.

Abu Hurayra Radiyallahu ‘anhu said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, 'What do you think would happen if there was a river by someone's door in which he washed five times every day? Do you think that any dirt would remain on him?' They said, 'Not a scrap of dirt would remain on him.' He said, 'That is a metaphor of the five prayers by which Allah wipes out wrong actions.'"

Jäbir ibne-’Abdullah Radiyallahu ‘anhuma narrates that Nabi Sallallahu alaihi wasallam said: 'The key to Paradise is Salat and the key to Salat is Wuzu'. (Musnad Ahmad)

Anas Radiyallahu ‘anhu narrates that Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam said: 'The comfort and delight of my eyes has been placed in Salat.' (Nasai).

Hanzalah Al Usaidi Radiyallahu ‘anhu narrates that Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam said: 'The person who guards the five times Salat, its Wuzu, its prescribed time, its proper Ruku’ and Sujüd, while perceiving it to be the Right of Allah on him, he is forbidden upon Fire.' (Musnad Ahmad)

More than 30 Rohingya Muslims were killed in attacks by Buddhists last week in Burma's Rakhine state, the BBC has been told.

Foreign officials who had managed to access the area in the far west of the country told the BBC they had found evidence of a mass killing.

Human rights group Fortify Rights claims a series of attacks took place over five days last week.

The government and local officials have strongly denied claims of a massacre.

Revenge attacks

The latest development follows reports of clashes between Rohingyas and the police in the Maungdaw township over the past month.

It is thought tensions initially arose amid reports that several Rohingyas had been killed trying to flee over the border into Bangladesh.

Things escalated after a local policeman was reported missing, presumed killed.

How to Avoid Backbiting ?

So often when we indulge in a conversation we somehow end up talking about someone not present among us. It’s almost unavoidable as conversations become less interesting without backbiting! It’s a term that makes us shudder, but sadly it’s a common occurrence when we fail to realize its effects.

Allah (swt) says: O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful. [Quran, 49:12]

Through this verse, we can understand the severity of the sin of backbiting. Would any one of us like to eat the flesh of a human being? Allah is saying that backbiting is equal to cannibalism.

Why? Because backbiting can cause very bad effects on an individual, family, and even on a society. Sometimes it can lead to crime. That’s why Allah has requested His servants to avoid backbiting by giving an example that is clear enough to help us understand its effects upon mankind.

‘Do you know what is backbiting?’ They (the Companions) said: ‘Allah and His Messenger (SAWS) know best. Thereupon he (the Prophet (SAWS)) said: ‘Backbiting implies your talking about your brother (behind his back) in a manner which he does not like.’ It was said to him: ‘What is your opinion about this that if I actually find (that failing) in my brother which I made a mention of?’ He (SAWS) said: ‘If (that failing) is actually found (in him) what you assert, you in fact backbited him, and if that is not in him it is a slander!’ [Muslim]

Why Backbiting?

Before knowing how to avoid it, it’s important to know why it happens. So first of all, let’s look at the five most common reasons for backbiting:

1. Jealousy : This is the main reason why people talk about others in their absence. Jealousy means envying someone’s achievements and good. So those who are jealous of someone will automatically start to find fault and convey those faults to others.
