  • Sri Lanka hardline monk denounces Dalai Lama
Leader of right-wing Bodu Bala Sena says Tibetan spiritual leader being influenced by 'Muslim extremists'.   A Sri Lankan Buddhist monk leading an anti-Muslim campaign has accused the Dalai Lama of being influenced by "Muslim extremists" and   said the Tibetan spiritual leader could not be accepted as a world Buddhist leader.  Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara, the secretary general of the Sri Lankan Buddhist group Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), spoke out on Tuesday after the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader called on monks in Myanmar and Sri Lanka to end violence towards Muslims in their countries. Clashes broke out in two Sri Lankan towns with large Muslim populations in June during a BBS-led protest. Reacting to the Dalai Lama's comments made in India, Gnanasara told reporters: "Like Pope for Christians, he is considered as the leader for all...

  • Hamas rejects Gaza truce unless blockade ends
Hamas has rejected a ceasefire to end the 16-day offensive against Gaza unless Israel ends its blockade of the strip, its leader Khaled Meshaal has said. "We reject today... and will reject in the future" a ceasefire before negotiations on Hamas's demands, which include lifting years of blockade against the Palestinian enclave, Meshaal told journalists in Doha, Qatar's capital. Lifting the eight-year blockade is a main demand of Hamas which also wants the opening of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt and Israel to free prisoners. Meshaal's statement came as the UN Human Rights Council voted to launch an independent inquiryinto Israel's offensive.  Read More...

  • THE IMPORTANCE OF SADAQATUL-FITR
Sadaqatul fitr is a compulsory charity which becomes payable on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.   The Noble Messenger of Allah ( Sallallâhu 'alayhi wasallam) said: "The fast remains suspended between Heaven and Earth until the fitrah is paid." Rasulullâh Sallallâhu ‘alayhi wasallam made charity of Fitr compulsory as a purification of fasts from useless talks and vile discourses and also as food to the poor (Hadith-Abû Dawûd).   Fitr means to break fast or to refrain from fasting. Hence the Eid after the fasts of Ramadhân is called Eid-ul-Fitr, as it is the day of rejoicing after the completion of fasting. On this occasion of happiness, as a sign of gratitude one has to give a specific amount in aims, which is called Sad'qatui-Fitr. To purify and obtain complete blessings for the fasts of Ramadhân Mubârak one has to give Sadaqatul-Fitr....

Muslims around the world abstain from food and drink from before dawn until dusk during the Islamic holy month Both houses of India's parliament have been adjourned in uproar over reports that some Hindu MPs tried to forcibly feed a Muslim man fasting for Ramadan. The MPs from the right-wing Shiv Sena party reportedly took their anger out on a government canteen worker because their food of choice was unavailable. Opposition parties, led by the Congress, protested in parliament against the incident, saying it was a violation of religious belief. They also demanded an apology from the Shiv Sena. According to reports, the incident happened on Tuesday...

  • Israeli shelling kills scores in eastern Gaza
Israeli attacks have killed 97 people in the Gaza Strip, raising the overall Palestinian death toll to 435 since the start of a major military campaign on July 8, Palestinian health officials say, as the military wing of Hamas claims it has abducted an Israeli soldier.

The vast majority of Sunday's dead were in Shujayea, a district between Gaza City and the Israeli border, with at least 60 people killed there in an intense bombardment which began overnight. Besides Shujayea, where bodies littered the streets, the worst hit neighbourhoods were al-Shaaf and al-Tuffa. A Shujayea resident who reached a hospital told Al Jazeera: "It is a massacre taking place in Shujayea. It is a massacre - in the full sense of the word - committed by Israel against innocent civilians. There are no armed men among us. The streets of Shujayea are...

  • Toll mounts as Israel shells northern Gaza
Israel has announced the deaths of two of its soldiers on the second day of a ground offensive into Gaza that it says is aimed at destroying Hamas' cross-border tunnels. At least 34 Palestinians also died on Saturday, the second day of the Israeli ground invasion, as Israel intensified its shelling by tanks and artillery of the northern Gaza Strip. Al Jazeera's John Hendren, reporting from Jerusalem, said the two soldiers were killed during an exchange of gunfire as they fought Palestinians in tunnels near the Israeli Gaza border. The two were the first Israeli soldiers to die in this recent escalation while fighting the Palestinians. The two Israeli solders were killed on Friday, one in an incident of friendly tank fire and another in an accident in a tunnel. During the exchange in which the soldiers were killed, a Palestinian fighter...

  • Laylatul Qadr-The Night of Power!
By Abu Muhmmad Yusuf Allah Ta’ala in His infinite Mercy has favoured us in so many ways. Such blessings that we cannot possibly enumerate nor show sufficient gratitude to the Almighty. Amongst the many blessings include a very special GIFT..Laylatul Qadr- The Night of Power. It is an opportunity to gain closeness to our Creator, forgiveness of our sins and an elevated position in Jannah (Paradise). The Night of Power is better that a 1000 months (83 years, 4 months)! Allah, Most Wise, says: "The Night of Power is better than a thousand months.” (Quran 97:3 ) The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) is reported to have said: “Whosoever stands in "Ibaadah" (worship) on this night, with sincere faith and with genuine hopes of gaining reward, his previous sins will be forgiven." (Hadith-Bukhari and Muslim) WHEN IS IT? The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is reported to have said: "Seek it (laylatul qadr) in Ramadan in the last ten nights. For verily,...

  • SEEKING ENTRY INTO JANNAH
    By Sister Jasmine
We are into the last ten days of Ramadaan, and this is the point when the neighbours stop sending cookies at Iftar time, when fewer people go for Taraweeh (evening prayer), and more and more go to the malls. I remember as a child, when we reached the fifteenth day, our parents used to say, don’t worry, you are at the top of the hill, now it is easier because it is downhill. This has become a belief entrenched in us, but what happens with this perception is that we get careless and thus we miss out on the most important days of Ramadaan. These are the days when Allah invites us to work for entry into Jannah (Paradise). Instead we are so busy deciding between what to serve for Eid lunch and doing last minute shopping. In view of our goal, these last days are actually an uphill climb. Here strong faith is crucial. Imagine Imaan (faith) as a vehicle to get us up this hill. As we place our foot on the accelerator, feed the tank with kindness and empathy. Not just...

  • The superiority of fasting
    1. Ar-Rayyan Gate is for those who observe Saum (sincerely). Narrated Sahl ibn Sa’d (radiallah ‘anhu) the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “There is a gate in Paradise called Ar-Rayyan, and those who observe Saum (fast) will enter through it on the Day of Resurrection and none except them will enter through it. It will be said: ‘Where are those who observed Saum.’ They will get up, and none except them will enter through it. After they have entered, the gate will be closed and nobody will enter it.” (Bukhari and Muslim) Narrated Abu Hurairah (radiallah ‘anhu), Allah’s Messenger (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “Whoever gives two kinds (of things or properties) in charity for Allah’s Cause, and whoever was amongst those who used to observe Saum will be called from the gate of Ar-Rayyan.” (Bukhari) 2.               Observing Saum restricts sexual desire. Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas’ood (radiallah ‘anhu),  the...

  • 30 Points on the Fiqh of Fasting
A Summary of Kitāb’l-Ṣiyām - al-Sharḥ’l-Mumti‘ by Sh al-‘Uthaymīn http://propheticguidance.co.uk/Fiqh-of-Fasting.pdf   Please find below most of the common issues concerning fasting taken from the Chapter on Fasting from al-Sharḥ’l-Mumti‘ by the late Sh al-‘Uthaymīn and despite the obvious allowance for differences of opinion and preferences for fatwa etc, were then initially summarised into 15 pages by Ustādh Mu‘ādh b. Sāmī Āl-‘Abd’l-Qādir and then summarised further into 30 distinct points by Ustādh Ḥamad b. Sulaymān al-Ḥuqayl which are translated as follows:   1. Ṣawm or Fasting is defined as “The worship of Allāh with the intention of refraining from food, drink, intercourse and all those things which break the fast, from the break of dawn until sunset.” It is...

  • Fasting for three days can regenerate entire immune system, study finds
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/10878625/Fasting-for-three-days-can-regenerate-entire-immune-system-study-finds.html Fasting for as little as three days can regenerate the entire immune system, even in the elderly, scientists have found in a breakthrough described as "remarkable". Although fasting diets have been criticised by nutritionists for being unhealthy, new research suggests starving the body kick-starts stem cells into producing new white blood cells, which fight off infection. Scientists at the University of Southern California say the discovery could be particularly beneficial for people suffering from damaged immune systems, such as cancer patients on chemotherapy.

  • First Ten Days of Ramadan: A Shower of Mercy
By Maria Zain Ramadan is known to be broken down into thirds. The first ten days of Ramadan are known as the “Ten Days of Mercy”. Muslims are aware that Ramadan is a month of spiritual opportunities, but what does the “mercy” really mean to Muslims? One of God’s names is Ar-Rahman, the Most Merciful, and Muslims call upon God using this name in nearly everything they do. Thus, there is no surprise that Mercy manifests itself in the month that God created for Himself. In the sacred hadith below, God says: "O son of Adam, as long as you call upon Me and put your hope in Me, I have forgiven you for what you have done and I do not mind. O son of Adam,...

  • Ramadan : Month of fasting, month of meaning
By Tariq Ramadan Most of the classical religious teachings regarding the month of Ramadan insist on the rules being respected as well as the deep spiritual dimension of this month of fasting, privations, worship and meditation. While thinking about it more closely, one realises that this month marries apparently contradictory requirements which, nevertheless, together constitute the universe of faith. To ponder over these different dimensions is the responsibility of each conscience, each woman, each man and each community of faith, wherever they are. We can never emphasise enough the importance of this “return to oneself” required during this period of fast. Ramadan is a month of abrupt changes ; this is true here more than anywhere else. At the heart of our consumer society, where we are used to easy access to goods and possessions and where we are driven by the marked individualism of our daily lives, this month requires from everyone that we come back to the centre and the...
