  • Anti-terrorism Bill will be changed
The highly controversial Antiterrorism Bill is subject to amendments and changes in Parliament and as such no one should have any fear or feeling of threat from the proposed Bill, Justice Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said. The government is aware of concerns raised by the global and local community on certain provisions contained in the draft of the Anti-terrorism Bill and the Government is ready to alleviate them by discussion, compromise and flexibility, he added. Addressing a news conference at the Information Department auditorium, Minister Rajapakshe said the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) passed in 1979 under President J.R. Jayewardene’s rule as a temporary measure to counter the emerging separatist insurgency. The PTA has been misused and exploited by successive Governments since then for their personal and political...

Escalating Violence: Renewed assaults on the Muslim community

Post war Sri Lanka saw a wave of attacks targeting the Muslim community by Buddhist extremist groups. The Mahinda Rajapaksa government allowed these extremists free rein, which caused extensive damage, including injuries and the damaging of Muslim-owned property. This resulted in the Muslims voting en-bloc to overthrow the once indispensable Rajapaksa regime.

The regime change brought about a lull in Buddhist extremist activity but tensions restarted with land issues in Musali, when groups claimed that Muslim IDPs, returning from the 1990 eviction by the LTTE were being illegally settled within the Wilpattu forest reserve. President Maithripala Sirisena made public statements claiming that the former Minister Basil Rajapaksa who headed the Presidential Task Force for Northern Development had allocated land within the Wilpattu reserve. Later he retracted this statement, and said not a single inch of Wilpattu reserve had been encroached. The groups continued their campaign to deprive the Muslim IDPs of their right to return.

This led to a build up of campaign by the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), the Sinhala Ravaya and Ravana Balaya. Soon, they were joined by a few more ‘Facebook warriors’ – Mahason Balaya, The Sinhale Jathika Balamuluwa (SJB) and Dan Priyasath who used new media technology to spread hate and violent messages. Most of these groups found this an opportunity to hoodwink Buddhist corporates and the Sinhalese Diaspora in South Korea, Australia, Europe and America to fund the saviours of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

In the absence of stern action by the Government or the Buddhist hierarchy of Mahanayake’s, Ven. Gnanasara and company went on a major racist offensive against the minorities. Did Yahapalanaya consider these racist assaults as freedom of expression or did the Sirisena-Wickremesinghe government of good governance provide subtle support to these extremists in the hope that they could break the dominance of the Sinhala Buddhist vote bank by the Rajapaksa’s joint opposition? Evidence points to the latter as no action has been taken despite numerous police complaints and legal action instituted by Muslims.

The end of Sinhala and Tamil New year celebrations saw renewed assaults on the Muslim community by extremist Buddhist forces. Since the dawn of April 16th, there have been at least twenty incidents of violence or attempted violence, hate, intimidation and threats to the Muslims, their places of religious worship and business. These renewed threats are from Bodu Bala Sena, Sinhala Ravaya, Sinhale, Mahason Balaya to name a few.

The Secretariat for Muslims (SFM) a Muslim civil society organisation documented 538 incidents against the Muslims from 2013 to 2015. The following is a documentation of the violence against Muslims during the last 5 weeks:

16th April, 2017

Petrol Bombs thrown at shops in Godapitiya

Four shops owned by Muslims were attacked with petrol Bombs in Godapitiya, Porruva. This incident went unreported due to the pressure brought by the local police. This was not even reported in the social media by local residents, fearing further police intimidation. Even after a month, the police have still not been able to investigate and apprehend the perpetrators of this act of violence.

20th April, 2017

Land Grab at Irrakamam in Mayakkali

2 1/2 Acres of land owned by Muslims was forcibly taken over in Irrakamam in Mayakkali. No police action has been taken even after complaints have been lodged.

25th April 2017

Incitement by Ven. Gnanasara Thero in Irrakamam.

Ven. Gnanasara thero visited Irrakamam and made a very provocative speech violating his bail conditions. Police complaints have been made and no action has been taken up to to date.

8th May 2017

Myanmar Boat People

Ven. Gnanasara Thero claimed at a press conference that refugees from Myanmar had arrived in Sri Lanka with the intention of invading our land. These refugees were arrested at sea by the Sri Lankan navy while they were attempting to flee to Australia by boat due to the atrocities of the racist Myanmar government. This statement was purely meant to provoke the Sinhala Buddhists.

10th May 2017

Vesak celebrations

Vesak celebrations with Bodhi pujas were held in Irrakamam in Mayakkali, a predominantly Muslim area with the intent to provoke, but the Muslims showed much restraint and no untoward incidents were reported.

May 14th 2017

Threatening Muslims in Onegama in Polonnaruwa

A group of Buddhist monks led by Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero threatened Muslims in Onegama in Polonnaruwa and broke their huts and livelihood means. The Police who were present did not attempt to stop this mob from causing this violence. Hiru TV showed the destruction of the huts of the Muslims. Here again, Ven. Gnanasara Thero insulted Allah subahanauwa ta’aala in the most derogatory and inflammatory way. Defaming of Allah subahanauwa ta’aala, is the most blasphemous insult that no Muslim will tolerate. Police complaints have been made with video evidence and they have failed to take any action yet.

15th May 2017

Attack on the Muslim Village of Selvanagar in the Trincomalee District

The entire Muslim population of Selva Nagar in Thoppur (Tricomalee District, bordering Seruvila and Muthur electorate) were threatened by a mob of outsiders, led by Buddhist monks. A large number of Muslims have fled the area due to this intimidation. The local temple (Pansala) currently owns six acres and they are now attempting to claim 49 acres of Muslim lands insisting that these are archaeological sites. Muslims have been living and in possession of these lands for over a hundred years. Residents claim that these extremists are trying to drive them out as the LTTE did during the ethnic conflict.

15th May 2017

A fire broke out in Panadura Mosque .

It is suspected that extremist elements may have attempted to set the mosque on fire using a petrol bomb. This is the second petrol bomb attack. They had also set alight a garbage dump close by. No police action has been initiated.

15th May 2017

Masked men attack Kohilawatta Ibrahim Jumma Mosque

Unidentified men had arrived on motorbikes and attempted to attack the mosque. When some workers who were doing renovation had come out, they had left on their bikes.

16th May 2017

Insults Allah:

Once again, Ven. Gnanasara Thero insults Allah subahanauwa ta’aala in the most demeaning way at a press conference.

16th May 2017

Attack on Muslim Selva Nagar in Thoppur

A large group of Buddhist extremists numbering about 200 had gone to Selva Nagar in Thoppur with clubs and swords and caused extensive damage to 16 houses and property. No police action has been taken despite several complaints.

16th May 2017

Gang Attacks Kohilawatte Mosque

The Kohilawatte Mosque, in Sedawatte, was attacked with stones and clubs, around 1:30 p.m. by an unidentified gang, resulting in extensive damage. Wellampitiya Police has been provided CCTV footage of the attack and no arrests have been made as yet.

May 17 2017

Two Shops In Panadura Attacked

Two Muslim owned shops were attacked in Panadura and extensive damage caused to its furniture, equipment and fittings. One was a bakery and the other was a communications facility.

May 18th 2017

Last Chance Electrical showroom burned

The Last Chance show room in Wennappuwa has been set on fire and burnt down completely on the night of 17th May. The losses are estimated at several millions.

21st May 2017

Mallawapitiya mosque in Kurunegala Attacked

A procession led by Ven. Gnanasara, which was going to Ibbagamuwa, was stopped by police. Thereafter, Ven. Gnanasara and other Buddhist extremists claimed that they were being stopped at the call of the Muslims and abused in raw filth. They called on the crowd that had gathered to attack the Muslims. Six petrol bombs had been hurled at the Mallawapitiya mosque causing damage. Police have not arrested anyone yet.

21st May 2017

A Cosmetic Shop in Elpitiya burned

A cosmetic store owned by a Muslim was set on fire causing extensive damage. Police have still failed to make a comprehensive investigation.

22nd May 2017

A leather Store in Wijerama Junction, Maharagama set alight

A leather store belonging to a Muslim at Wijerama Junction, Maharagama has been set on fire during the night and completely burned, with heavy losses.

It is very clear that Ven. Gnanasara is attempting to prevent his arrest over the Homagama magistrate’s complaint of contempt of court and intimidation of witnesses. He is attempting to generate protests from the majority Buddhist community by claiming that he is being arrested on the charges filed by Muslims. He has continued to violate his bail conditions, and is aware that he has very little chances of evading arrest. The majority of Sinhalese who do not subscribe to Ven. Gnanasara’s extremism will not move a finger if this racist is arrested. It should be noted that he commanded a mere 27,000 Island wide votes at the last general elections.

The Government of President Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe need to deal with this major crisis which will destabilise their hard earned victory in January 2015. The Muslim parliamentarians, civil society, business community and academia have requested the government to act with a strong resolve to ensure that rule of law prevails. A peaceful environment will ensure the rapid reconciliation of all peoples of Sri Lanka.

Anti-Muslim Attacks: Maithri Passes The Buck, Blames Police

Latest

President Maithripala Sirisena who has in the past ordered the Police to carry out impartial investigations on various crimes, in his capacity as the Head of State, has this time around passed the buck, evading responsibility and has instead blamed the police for allowing anti-Muslim attacks to escalate in the country. He had blamed the police during yesterday’s SLFP Central Committee meeting.

President Sirisena

His comments comes as yet another Muslim owned shop in Kahawatte was torched by an unidentified group. Meanwhile, the Colombo Telegraph learns that during the meeting presided by Sirisena yesterday, the Muslim ministers who are SLFP members had remained mum and instead it was several junior members of the party who had expressed their growing concerns over the violence against their community. Several non-Muslim members had also supported the junior Muslim members and had said that steps must be taken to put an end to these attacks against the minority community.

Even though Sirisena appeared to be soft peddling the issue and has failed to take action against the hate crime culprits led by Bodu Bala Sena’s (BBS) General Secretary Galagoda Atte Gnanasara, Sirisena was quick to express his condolence to the people of Manchester following today’s attack, all while his very own people were being attacked by hardcore Buddhist groups with mosques and shops owned by Muslims coming under increasing attack since last month. Since the escalation of attacks against Muslims last week, neither has Sirisena or Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe issued any official statements condemning the attacks on the Muslims.

Over the weekend, Sirisena also shot down a request by Muslim MPs who wanted to meet him to discuss the growing attacks against their community. Amidst rising tensions, Sirisena left for Australia today. Meanwhile, the US Ambassador in Sri Lanka and the EU Office in Colombo have expressed concern and have called on the Government to take prompt action against the growing hate crimes in the country.

Although he came to power assuring an end to racism, Sirisena seems to have in the recent past forgotten his promise, and appears to be following in the footsteps of ex-President Mahinda Rajapaksa. During Rajapaksa’s reign, Muslims came under serious attack in the hands of groups such as BBS, Ravana Balaya which resulted in Rajapaksa losing a sizable amount of the minority votes at the election, for failing to take action against the culprits. The attacks against Muslims escalated in 2014 when BBS led groups to Aluthgama, Beruwala and Dharga Town killing at least 4 people, injuring more than 80 and rendering hundreds homeless. The anti-Muslim riots resulted in many homes, mosques and shops being attacked and torched. Despite the severity of the attack, the mainstream media in the country censored news on the riots. Globe-Trotting Maithri Too Busy To Meet Muslim MPs As BBS Led Groups Continue Their Rampage

Latest

More focused on his very own political survival and foreign jaunts, President Maithripala Sirisena appeared to have no time to discuss the increasing attacks against the Muslim community, and had shot down a request by Muslim MPs to meet him and had instead directed Law and Order Minister Sagala Ratnayaka to preside the meeting scheduled for today.

Maithripala

Sirisena who is off to Australia today on a four day state visit, was too busy with the cabinet reshuffle and his impending Australia tour, and had little or no time to focus on the fact that the Muslims in the country were coming under increasing attacks once again by the Bodu Bala Sena(BBS) with a mosque and Muslim owned shops in several parts of the country being attacked or torched.

Even at the time this news report was published, several more establishments owned by Muslims had reportedly come under attack. Since mid-April this year, there has been at least 15 such incidents in various parts of the country. However, no action appears to have been taken by law enforcement officers apart from the customary ‘we will look into this.’ The government is yet to make an official statement on this issue despite growing tension as well as fears within the Muslim community of yet another BBS sponsored Aluthgama riot which left people killed, injured and houses and shops burnt.

Despite back to back attacks allegedly launched by the BBS led mobs against Muslim owned establishments and mosques in several parts of the country, the police are yet to take any serious steps to apprehend the culprits, including Bodu Bala Sena’s General Secretary Galagoda Atte Gnanasara who has been making anti-Muslim statements as well as hate mongering against Muslims at various meetings attended by large groups of Buddhist youth.

Since coming to power in January 2015, Sirisena has been busy globe-trotting and has been overseas at least 25 times. Sources pointed out that before strengthening Sri Lanka’s relationships with the outside world, it was important for leaders to focus on building strained relationships within the communities in the country.

In his election manifesto, Sirisena promised to ensure freedom of religious belief for people belonging to all religions in the country. “Religious disturbances are developing in the country due to the activities of extremist religious sects. In this situation the extremist groups mutually nourish one another and are expanding their activities. In order to control this situation, I will establish regional and national councils comprising religious leaders who will boldly work for religious coexistence and against extremism, without giving room for extreme elements of all religions. These Councils will be empowered to investigate into all problems associated with places of religious worship and arrive at final conclusions. Issues unresolved at regional level will be referred to the National Council,” he said in the 62 page manifesto which was released during the presidential election. However, no such councils have been appointed despite Sirisena been in office for over two years. (By Munza Mushtaq © Colombo Telegraph)

Let us Pray for Tranquility and Normalcy & Work Towards Peace & Coexistence

Latest

Let us pray Allah, the Almighty for the prevalence of tranquility and normalcy in the country while striving to uphold peace and coexistence

As Muslims living in this country, we have been subjected to various trials and tribulations as evident in the history. Often times, we have overcome these trials by adhering to Islamic guidance during adversities, that are based on the etiquettes of forbearance and tolerance.

Those who have unwavering faith in Allahu Tha’ala would definitely emerge victorious from their hardships and the lives of Prophets of Allahu Tha’ala provide irrefutable testimony for this universal fact. While being patient, we also should refrain from cardinal sins whilst strengthening our connection with The Sustainer. Glorious Month of Ramadhaan that is foreclosing on us provides an excellent opportunity for this spiritual drill for believers. Without a shred of doubt, virtuous deeds of the pious would definitely ward off calamities and bring peace and prosperity to the country.

Naturally, the Muslims & the other minorities of Sri Lanka have become despondent and restive due to the present situation prevailing in the country as certain venomous elements continue to openly lunge to provoke racism. These kinds of despicable attempts, unleashed against a peace loving communities in the country, only would undermine the development of the nation along with germinating mistrust and hostility among communities. Above all it is a clear violation of the basic rights solemnly pledged to the subjects by the very Constitution.

However, the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU) requests the Muslims all over the island to perform virtuous deeds such as Salah (prayer), Isthighfar(repentance), Sadaka (charity), Soum (fasting) Dua (supplication) and Sabr (patience) while reciting Kunooth An-Naazila in all the obligatory five time prayers until the commencement of Ramadhaan.

Additionally, the ACJU requests the Ulama, professionals and intellects as well as the community leaders to make collective efforts to eliminate the racism in a peaceful manner and to create awareness among the Muslim community of the fruitfulness of being tolerant and of turning more and more towards Allahu Tha’ala rather than succumbing to emotions and resorting to materialistic efforts.

Let us all peace loving Sri Lankans strive towards strengthening bonds of peace & coexistence of this Nation.

May Allahu Tha’ala overwhelm the evil agendas of the villainous elements and bless all the communities to live in peace and harmony.

“Food for the Soul”

SUBJECT:  VIRTUE AFTER VICE

Allah, The Most Exalted, says:

“Indeed good actions eradicate bad actions. This is a reminder for people who pay heed.” (Qur’an Surah 11, Verse 114)

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is reported to have said:

”Be conscious of Allah wherever you are. Follow the bad deed with a good one to erase it, and engage others with beautiful character.” (Hadith - Tirmidhi)

Note: Virtue is a cleanser and can remove the stains of sins.  We often respond to a sin by putting ourselves in a figurative corner and abusing ourselves psychologically until we get over that sin. This is not what Allah Ta’ala wants from us. Yes, we should feel guilty, have a level of regret and MOST IMPORTANTLY repent, but it should not stop us from moving forwa rd in good deeds. People use their sins as an excuse to stay behind. Do not allow sin to stop yourself from all the other good that you could be involved in.

The response to a sin should not be to wait, but rather to race to do something good so the sin can be erased. Our attitude should be proactive and positive. We should always have hope that Allah Ta’ala can, and will, have mercy on us as long as we keep struggling and pushing forward.

“Food for the Soul”

SUBJECT:  BEING GOOD TO YOUR WIVES

Allah, The Most Exalted, says:

"…And live with them in kindness…" (Quran 4:19)

“And among His signs is that He created for you wives from among yourselves, that you may find contentment in them, and He has instilled between you affection and mercy. Verily, in that are indeed signs for people who reflect”. (Quran 30:21)

The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) said,

“The most perfect of believers in belief is the best of them in character.  The best of you are those who are the best to their women.” (Hadith Tirmidhi)

"A believing man should not hate a believing woman.  If he dislikes something in her character, he should be pleased with some other trait of hers." (Hadith Muslim)

Note: A husband is required to treat his wife with affection, respect her feelings, and show her kindness and consideration. It is the right of the wife to be treated well in all aspects of daily life. The husband should interact with her in a well-mannered way with a respectable attitude, sweet words and a smiling face. Being kind is indeed a pillar of strength that will fortify any marriage relationship. Remember being kind and respectful is more important that be ing right! A single harsh word can cause irreversible harm whereas a polite word could make her day!

Pearls of Wisdom: No.54 “Food for the Soul” SUBJECT: ANGER

Latest

Pearls of Wisdom: No.54

“Food for the Soul”

SUBJECT:  ANGER

Allah, The Most Exalted, says:

“Those who spend (in Allâh's Cause - deeds of charity, alms, etc.) in prosperity and in adversity, who repress anger, and who pardon men; verily, Allâh loves Al-Muhsinoon (the good doers).” (Qur’an 3:134)

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is reported to have said;

"The strong is not the one who overcomes the people by his strength, but the strong is the one who controls himself while in anger." (Hadith-Sahih Al-Bukhari)

Note: Anger is a word, one letter short of Danger! It usually begins with madness and often results in regret. It is an emotion which if controlled, then the results will be positive. On the other hand if uncontrolled, then the outcome would be negative or detrimental.

Many things cause one to become angry and it is very easy for us to let go of our tempers and blow into a rage. However we should try to remain as calm as possible and exercise restraint. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) advises us: “When one of you is angry while standing, let him sit down and if his anger goes away that is good; otherwise let him lie down.” (Hadith Abu Dawud)

“A moment of patience, in a moment of anger, saves a thousand moments of regret!”
